Talented and Gifted

TAG Education

The North Marion School District recognizes the importance of differentiated learning experiences for gifted learners and acknowledges the value of integration within the regular education program. The foundation of TAG Education is provided in classroom-based instruction characterized by differentiated instruction, flexible skill-based groupings, complex integrated problem-solving challenges, and individually designed inquiry-based projects designed to fit the academic rate and level of each student.

Additional information about the NMSD TAG program can be found in our TAG PROGRAM PARENT HANDBOOK, or by reviewing our ODE TAG Plan linked below.

Referral

Students may be referred for TAG evaluation consideration through teacher or parent referral. Students may also be considered for a TAG evaluation through a review of the Oregon State Assessment scores.

Talented and gifted services are to benefit all students in grades K – 12.  Kindergarten, first and second grades must not be overlooked in the identification process. Teachers at all grade levels should be encouraged to watch for signs of talented/gifted behaviors and make adaptations as needed.

If you think your student would benefit from TAG services, complete the Parent Request for TAG Evaluation form, linked below.

Eligibility

Each student's eligibility for TAG is considered using a multiple measures approach. The data used to determine eligibility includes behavioral, learning, and/or performance criteria, as well as scores from nationally normed standardized tests. Information is collected on each student that will minimally include:

  • Observation from adults: school staff, administrators, parent referrals, or interviews with the student will be used.
  • Behavioral Data: Information is collected using classroom surveys, individual checklists and parent questionnaires.
  • Performance data: Information is collected regarding the student's performance in the instructional program. Classroom performance information considers the level (placement in instructional materials) and the student's rate of learning.
  • Test Scores: Identification is based on performance on a state and nationally-standardized test of mental ability, academic talent in reading, and /or academic talent in math.
  • File Review
