Sources of Strength Will Return During Winter Term

Sources of Strength wheel: phys./ment. health, fam. support, pos. friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, spirituality

Sources of Strength needs student leaders once again!

Helping others who are struggling by providing hopeful messaging is the main goal of the students who run North Marion’s Sources of Strength leadership group, which will restart this January. Student leaders are recruited through staff and student nominations. Recruitment will take place in November and December.

Sources of Strength is a suicide prevention program that research has shown improves how teens think about adult support and makes it more acceptable to seek help when struggling with suicidal thoughts. The program possesses an uplifting quality, encouraging everyone not to dwell on their struggles but to focus on their strengths: physical health, mental health, family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, and spirituality.

Students who join the Sources of Strength leadership group receive a four-hour session from a certified trainer and then work for months to create encouraging messages to reach their peers. These messages may come to life through posters, presentations, videos, texts, or public service announcements.

If you wish to nominate a student leader for Sources of Strength, please contact Teacher Annie Fale at anna.fale@nmarion.k12.or.us or 503-678-8418.
