The North Marion Boys and Girls soccer teams both almost made it to the finals in the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) 4A State Championships. While both their victorious runs ended during semifinal games on Nov. 8, the teams left a lasting impression of fiery athleticism as they rushed through the grass through slashing rain. The teams also inspired a deep pride in the community.

“I can’t even put into words how proud I am of them,” Athletic Secretary Anita Whitehead said. “They worked so hard, and they had to play in some miserable conditions. Lots of perseverance and grit.”

Truly, both teams made it difficult for their opponents. The North Marion Boys Soccer Team remained tied at half-time, 0-0, holding off Ontario, which only just managed to squeak in a goal in the second half.

“Both Ontario and North Marion battled in a very even and competitive game on Tuesday afternoon in front of about 250 soccer fans,” Athletic Director Mark Sundquist said. “Both teams played with a lot of class, grit, and intensity and both teams deserved to win. Ontario scored with 4 minutes left and North Marion had a chance to tie the score on a penalty kick with 16 seconds left on the clock. The ball was placed very well, but the Ontario goalkeeper made an outstanding save to seal the victory. Our Huskies played very well together and battled the entire match, and the North Marion community is very proud of the coaching staff and players.”

The North Marion Girls Soccer Team fought Marist Catholic with all they had during the semifinals. Marist scored “on a free kick in the 36th minute and on a corner kick in the 77th minute,” Coach Ben Bonser recalled.

“It was a GREAT season Ben!” Superintendent Ginger Redlinger told Bonser in a recent email. “Thank you and your coaching team for helping the girls play above their abilities. I was there watching and recognized all the talent and skill on the pitch last night. It was a battle! We are all VERY proud of what they, and you, have accomplished.”
