Middle School Teacher Wins Yet Another Grant!

North Marion Middle School Instructional Coach and AVID Teacher Chelsea Landry has netted her fourth grant for her school this April, with a running total of $3,000 so far.

The latest award, totaling $1,200, comes from Believe in Reading, an organization that provides funding for literacy projects at nonprofits and public schools. Landry anticipates that she will receive her latest grant by the end of the spring trimester, intending to use it in the fall to further fill out the shelves of the Humanities classrooms.

“The purpose of growing our classroom libraries is to help all students and to have books/reading levels that represent our whole student body, Landry said.

What types of books is she getting and how will she choose them to ensure that they’re representative?

“I am going to get feedback from both students and teachers about what specific books they want to have in their classroom libraries and feedback from teachers, more broadly, about what authors they want more of, which genres, etc.,” she said.

Earlier this year, Landry landed three other grants, two of which were also for more books in the classroom: $1,000 grant from SELCO Credit Union and $500 from Oregon State Literacy Association. With the $300 grant from the Oregon State Credit Union, she bought large, rolling whiteboards for small group educational activities in the AVID elective classroom.
