This Giving Tuesday, Maps Community Foundation has chosen to divide a total of $10,000 among 20 schools in Oregon — two of which are in the North Marion School District.

Maps Community Foundation announced on Nov. 29 the schools that it had chosen to receive its $500 awards. The winners included the North Marion Intermediate and Primary schools.

Giving Tuesday is an annual and global celebration of generosity launched in 2012, and the Foundation is the nonprofit branch of Maps Credit Union, a Salem-based financial services company. More than 1,100 Maps members nominated local K-12 schools this year, and the Foundation then selected 20 winners at random, a Maps awards announcement said.

Maps members at North Marion helped with nominations, including Diane Laubsch, Assistant to the Superintendent/School Board Secretary, and Karla Morales-Rivera, Primary School Secretary.

Those nominations led to awards that may change local children's lives.

Schools may use the funds for classroom supplies, school-wide projects, after-school clubs, or individual student needs. School Principal Allison Hunt was elated with how the community has come together to help students.

“We are so excited to have this additional resource for our students,” Hunt said

There were four other winning schools from Marion County, as well as eight winning schools from Salem-Keizer, three from Polk County, and three private schools.
