Community Celebrates School Board Recognition Month

The North Marion School District will join the other 196 school districts in Oregon to celebrate January as School Board Recognition Month, Superintendent Ginger Redlinger announced Monday, Dec. 12.

“Our School Board members spend countless hours of unpaid time working to provide the best possible education for our students,” Redlinger said. “They also serve as the corporate Board of Directors for one of our community’s largest employers. Celebrating School Board Recognition Month is one way to show appreciation for all they do.”

School Board members represent their fellow citizens’ views and priorities when it comes to the community’s public schools, and they also reinforce the principle of local control over public education, Redlinger said.

The School Board’s main goal is to support student achievement, Redlinger added. To achieve that goal, the board works with school staff and administration works on tasks including:

• Creating a vision for what parents and citizens want their school district to become and how to make student achievement the top priority;
• Setting standards for what students must learn and be able to do;
• Assessing whether schools achieve their goals, and whether students are learning;
• Creating a safe and orderly climate where students can learn and teachers can teach; and
• Focusing on continuous improvement by questioning, examining, and reexamining issues related to student achievement.

We are proud of our School Board’s efforts to meet these needs, especially now that the board has approved the School District’s Strategic Plan, Redlinger noted. As of this fall, with the School Board’s approval, North Marion had created a three-year plan to follow, with goals, a mission, and vision.

“Our School Board members are dedicated individuals who are committed to improving student achievement and to fighting for the best for all of our students,” Superintendent Ginger Redlinger said.
